Turin prosecutors on Monday
opened a probe into an insult launched by Northern League leader
Matteo Salvini against magistrates who indicted his No.2,
Liguria Councillor Edoardo Rixi, in an expenses case.
Salvini described the Italian judiciary as "disgusting".
Prosecutors want to establish if that constitutes the crime of
contempt of the magistrature, judicial sources said.
Salvini made the remark at a rally Sunday, saying that Rixi
was innocent.
Salvini was defiant after learning of the probe, saying the
Italian judiciary must clean up its act so that Italy can become
"a normal country".
Salvini said there were "many magistrates who do their job
very well," citing anti-mafia prosecutors, but added there were
those who "work a lot less, engage in politics, probe in one way
only and release dangerous criminals in 24 hours".
