vThe National Anti-Mafia Directorate
(DNA) said in its 2015 report Wednesday that Islamist terror and
Italian organized crime are "totally intertwined". "The
evolution of international terrorism and investigations carried
out so far on the criminal activities of the (so-called) Islamic
State (ISIS) and its affiliates - or aspiring 'martyrs' - in our
country confirm the links between mafia-type organized crime and
international terrorism," the report said. The DNA report
described ISIS as a "Mafia-State (that) accumulates
approximately $3 billion a year via extremely far-reaching
criminal activities: drug, oil, art, arms, tobacco, and migrant
trafficking, kidnapping and extortion, corruption and money
laundering". These activities "require a vast international
network of complicit relationships that are external to the
terrorist-mafia organization".
