The 5-Star Movement (M5S) will have a
long reflection on what went wrong after a "disappointing"
showing in the European elections, leader Giuseppe Conte has
said.
The M5S came a distant third in Italy with around 10.5% of the
vote, down from over 15% in the 2022 general election.
"As is right, we will start an internal reflection to try to
delve deeper into the reasons for this result, which was not
what we expected," ex-premier Conte said.
"I can guarantee to all the voters who voted for us that our
nine or 10 MEPs will be consistent with the commitments made
during the election campaign.
"Therefore, they will be peace builders, they will fight at
every level against austerity, they will advance our battles
against corruption and for a Greener, more social and inclusive
Europe".
He said the M5S would intensify dialogue with "progressive"
parties, including the opposition centre-left Democratic Party
(PD), in order to "offer an alternative this this government".
