Education and Merit Minister Giuseppe
Valditara on Saturday hailed the precious job teachers do on
International Teachers Day.
Saying that he hoped that school will be increasingly a pillar
of civil and social growth, the minister told teachers: "Yours
is a precious job".
The day comes amid a wave of violence against teachers in Italy
by students and parents, for which the government has upped
penalties.
It also comes after the latest figures showed that Italian
teachers are the lowest paid in Europe.
The FLC CGIL teachers union asked for more government resources
to be earmarked to bring salaries to the level of the European
average, while the UGL union called for "a modern school that
recognizes the value and dignity of the profession".
