Some 30 police and four protesters
were hurt in clashes at a pro-Palestinian march in Rome
Saturday, sources said Saturday night.
One of the injured protesters was a young woman who sustained
head wounds.
In the central Piazzale Ostiense, hooded protesters threw
stones, bottles, firecrackers and even a street sign at the
police, who responded with baton charges, water cannons and tear
gas.
During the day, in a closely guarded square with its famous
Ancient Roman Pyramid, 1,600 people were checked and 19 taken to
the Police Headquarters. "They are stopping us to guarantee the
war", one of the representatives of the Palestinian Arab
Democratic Union told the crowd with a megaphone.
Chants of "stop the genocide" and "halt arms sales to Israel"
were heard as well as slogans against Israeli Prime Minister
Benjamin Netanyahu and Premier Giorgia Meloni, who went on to
firmly condemn the violence.
Italian media reported that around 200 Black Bloc militants had
infiltrated the march.
