A researcher at the Sapienza University in Rome has won a five-year, 1.5 million euro grant from the European Research Council (ERC) to delve into robots that study the Internet as humans do in order to recognize and learn about new objects.
The project aims to develop the algorithms necessary to enable robots to learn to interact with and use objects through Internet research - a capacity that could lead to important commercial applications in domotics and robots designed to assist the elderly and the handicapped. Computer engineering professor Barbara Caputo was among 375 researchers funded this year in a grant system to enable promising young talents across the globe to build and lead laboratories in Europe.
The winners were selected from more than 3,000 applications submitted in 2014.
