Vatican City fountains and statues will get revamped thanks to bacteria-based technology created by Italy's National Technology, Energy and Environment Agency ENEA, media reported on Thursday.
Bio-restoration uses microorganisms to clean up works of art by removing accumulation, including smog and glue. The technology is also non-toxic to restorers, has reduced environmental impact and cheap.
"To date, ENEA labs have selected over 500 strains of bacteria and fungi to be used in restoration," the agency said.
