Italian-made zero-gravity coffee
machine ISSespresso could innovate space food as it heads for
delivery to Italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti on the
International Space Station in Monday's SpaceX supply ship
launch.
The unmanned Dragon cargo shuttle will deliver the coffee
machine, along with two tons of food, supplies and equipment
before detaching.
Davide Alvino from Argotec, the aerospace company which
developed the system with Lavazza and aerospace company
Finmeccanica, said the coffee experience said that as "ISSpresso
is above all a complex experiment in the physics of the fluids".
If the ISSespresso is successful, it could improve space
food nutrition.
"With the next supplies, we could send into orbit new
capsules to prepare other types of beverages, such as tea and
herbal teas, and also consommè", Alvino said. Additionally,
soups and broths could be on the menu.
