The mechanism by which the nervous
system is able to regenerate itself and repair connections
between nerve cells has been reconstructed for the first time
ever by Italian scientists, it emerged Thursday.
The discovery, published in the journal Scientific Reports,
was made by researchers at the Sant'Anna School of Advanced
Studies in Pisa.
"Computer simulations enabled us to reproduce the behaviour
of neurons in response to a chemical signal," researcher Iolanda
Morana Roccasalvo, co-author of the study, explained.
The breakthrough lays the foundations for the possible
future reconstruction of nerve connections impaired by injury or
disease, using both new-generation artificial limbs and
regenerative medicine.
