An annual shower of shooting
stars is set to peak this year on Wednesday night, and could be
even more dazzling than usual as the new moon leads to darker
skies.
The Perseids meteor shower is visible from mid-July each
year, and normally peaks in mid-August. Sky watchers have a good
chance of seeing shooting stars over the next ten nights, as
long as cloud cover is limited.
"This year the date with the traditional shooting stars
will be unmissable," said Gianluca Masi, scientific director of
the observatory at Acquaviva delle Fonti.
"The astronomical conditions are perfect, and it will be a
spectacle that will certainly live up to expectations," he
added.
"The weather may annoy, but you mustn't give up because we
will have 10 days from today of major meteor showers, so there
will be a lot of time to enjoy them," he said.
