A skeleton found in 2014 near
the Tunisian city of Tataouine belonged to the largest sea
crocodile that ever existed, paleontologists at Bologna
University said Monday.
The skeleton dating to 130 million years ago belonged to a
crocodile scientists named Machimosaurus rex, which measured 10
meters in length and weighed about three tonnes.
It survived extinction at the end of the Jurassic era and
survived through to the Cretaceous period that followed, the
paleontologists said.
This means the skeleton might hold precious information
about the transition between the two eras.
