Rome's Sant'Andrea hospital
said Monday that there was a "suspected rejection" after it
performed Italy's first face transplant at the weekend on a
woman.
The hospital said that the "general conditions of the patient
are good and there are no concerns for her life".
It said the 27-hour operation that ended early on Sunday was
"technically successful" but added that "the transplanted tissue
has show signs of distress".
As a result, the hospital said it was considering a temporary
reconstruction of the face with tissue taken from the patient
until a new donor face becomes available.
