Soccer fan Pope Francis called greetings in Spanish to his favourite team visiting the Vatican from Argentina during Wednesday's general papal audience.
Francis said the San Lorenzo de Almagro soccer squad from Buenos Aires, which recently won South America's highest championship trophy the Copa Libertadores, was "part of my cultural identity".
The Argentine-born pontiff has often spoken of his fondness for the club and is a dues-paying supporterof San Lorenzo.
The squad had said they would visit the pope if they won the continental championship and arrived with their trophy as well as a blue-and-red club jersey for Francis.
The pope insisted on meeting each player individually and posing for photos after the audience in Paul VI hall.
