The followers of Pope Francis's nine-language Twitter account, @Pontifex, passed the 16-million mark Tuesday.
Francis's most popular accounts are: in Spanish, 6.96 million; in English, 4.58 million; and in Italian, 2.03 million.
He has 1.171 million Portuguese-language followers; 308,000 followers in French; 287,000 in Latin; 280,000 in Polish; 218,000 in German; and 156,500 in Arabic.
His predecessor Benedict XVI opened the papal Twitter account, sending his first tweet on December 12, 2012.
Since becoming pope 19 months ago Francis has increased the following more than five-fold.
