American actor Richard Gere met
homeless people at a Rome shelter run by the Catholic
Sant'Egidio community Thursday.
He was welcomed by about 100 homeless users of the shelter,
who greeted him with rounds of applause.
"It's overwhelming to see all these beautiful faces of
brothers and sisters. It warms my heart. Only people cure
people. Not money and not politics, but only people can
communicate with each other. I am honoured to be here," he said.
Gere is in Italy to promote his film about New York
homeless, Time Out Of Mind. The film comes out in Italy June 15
and will debut at the Taormina film fest on June 11. Gere is
honorary president of this year's festival.
During the meeting at St. Egidio, Gere praised Pope
Francis, saying that "he is doing a lot" and regarding the
upcoming US elections, he said he would "change the constitution
so that Barack Obama can stay on".
