Pope Francis on Wednesday told a
General Audience at the Vatican that "on one thing we can all
agree - today's migrants should not be in those deadly seas and
deserts".
"But it's not through more restrictive laws, it is not through
the militarization of borders, nor pushbacks, that we will
obtain this result.
"We will obtain it instead by widening safe and regular pathways
for migrants, helping shelter those fleeing war, violence,
persecutions and various calamities; we will obtain it by
favouring in every way a global governance of migrations based
on justice, brotherhood and solidarity.
And "by joining forces to fight human trafficking, to stop
criminal traffickers who mercilessly exploit the misery of
others", concluded the pontiff.
