The United States is trying to use the courts to stop Donald Trump being elected president for the second time, ruling rightwing League party leader and deputy premier Matteo Salvini said after the presumptive Republican candidate in the November elections became the first American ex president to become a felon after his conviction on all counts in the Stormy Daniels hush money case in New York Thursday.
"In the USA they're trying to stop Trump by using the courtrooms like a club like they did against Berlusconi for 30 years," said Salvini, who is also transport minister.
Salvini described the hush money trial as a "political trial" and said he hoped the former real estate mogul and Apprentice star would win the November 4 election against Democratic President Joe Biden.
"I voice my solidarity and full support for Trump, in this and all his other cases," said Salvini, referring to the former president's three other prosecutions, for allegedly trying to rig the vote in Georgia, for allegedly taking classified documents home, and for allegedly suborning insurrection in the January 6, 2021 White House riots.
