"We are a country that provides
protection," and "openness to the world is necessary," but this
"does not mean that anyone who wishes to enter." "We must be
able to choose who comes to Germany," German Chancellor Olaf
Scholz said in the Bundestag during a tough debate on asylum
policy, highlighting the need for greater control over
immigration as well as "repatriation of those who cannot stay."
"There is no country in the world with a declining active
population that experiences economic growth. "This is the truth
we must face," he emphasised.
