Voting Sunday in Lithuania for the
general election runoff in which voters are to choose 71
deputies from uninominal constituencies. Polling stations will
remain open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Lithuanian time. 9.4 percent
of eligible voters have already expressed their preference
during the week by taking advantage of early voting. In the
first round, held two weeks ago and in which the 70 seats chosen
under the proportional system were allocated, the Social
Democratic Party won a relative majority (18), followed by
Premier Igrida Simonyte's Patriotic League (17) and the populist
"Dawn on Niemen" movement (14). Eight seats then went to the "In
the Name of Lithuania" movement, 7 to the Liberal League, and 6
to the Green and Peasant Party.
