Budget balances all improved in Senate says Giorgetti

28bn package in final straight

(ANSA) - ROME, DEC 27 - All the 2024 budget bill's financial balances were improved in the Senate, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti said in a keenly watched hearing before the House budget committee Wednesday.
"The Senate's examination has produced a series of changes that have on the whole generated an improvement in all the public finance balances", he said of the 28-billion-euro package that is now in its final straight and must be approved by the end of the year.
The salient features of the bill are an extension by one year of a labour tax wedge cut and the reduction of Italy's tax brackets from four to three with the bottom two being merged to help low earners.
Meanwhile Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reiterated that his centre right post-Berlusconi Forza Italia (FI) party was seeking an extension to the controversial 'superbonus' green home improvement subsidy, which Giorgetti has slammed for its deep impact on public finances and which the government is seeking to slim down.
Tajani said: "FI's judgement on the budget is positive, we have obtained what we were asking for, we are working for an extension of the Superbonus, especially for those whose jobs are over 70 per cent (completed), we will see whether in the 'milleproproghe' (omnibus decree) or in other legislative solutions".
