Italian population grows by 1 mn, report

7% of overall population non-Italian residents

(ANSA) - Rome, December 23 - Italy's population rose 1.8% in 2013, with an increase of more than one million people in just one year for an overall total of 60,782,668 residents, according to statistics bureau Istat's Italian Statistics Yearbook 2014, released on Tuesday.
    Over 7% of the overall population was made up by non-Italian residents, 28.3% of whom came from the European Union and 14.1% from northern Africa.
    In terms of Italy's perennially declining birthrate, in 2013 there were 514,308 births compared to 534,186 in 2012, representing a 3.7% decline.
    Domestic relations fared better statistically speaking, with divorces down 4.6%, from 53,806 in 2012 to 51,319 in 2013.
