(ANSA) - Rome, December 16 - Italian President Giorgio Napolitano spoke out Monday against the "inhumane conditions" plaguing the country's jails and asked parliament to bring in justice-system reform. In May, the European Court of Human Rights ordered Italy to make dramatic improvements to its prison system to stop overcrowding and violations against prisoners' rights. Earlier this year, the Strasbourg court rejected Italy's appeal against a sentence condemning Rome for the state of Italian jails. The country's prison conditions have long been a source of criticism from human rights' groups.
