(ANSA) - Palermo, December 17 - The body of a dead immigrant was among 110 people retrieved off the coast of Sicily around the island of Lampedusa on Tuesday. Authorities said their raft crossing the Mediterranean sea far exceeded maximum capacity, with passengers from Ghana, Mali, Togo, Gambia, and Pakistan. Lampedusa, which is closer to Africa than the Italian mainland, is a major landing for immigrants and refugees. In October a boat carrying over 500 migrants burned and sank off its coast, killing at least 300 people.
