(ANSA) - Rome, December 18 - Italians will pop the cork on 72 million bottles of domestic sparkling wine between Christmas and New Year's, the Italian Wine Economic Observatory (OVSE) said Wednesday. The amount is worth 450 million euros, a 3% drop over 2012. Spumante holiday consumption has dropped 11% in five years, from a record 81 million bottles sold in 2009, OVSE chief Giampietro Comolli told ANSA. The reverse is true abroad, where consumers have bought 900 million euros' worth of Italian spumantes to bring in the new year. This translates into an 8% rise in deliveries, with peaks of 20% in some emerging economies.
