Tuscany's regional assembly on
Wednesday rejected a motion by the rightwing Northern League
party to hang a crucifix in the assembly hall, with the
Democratic Party (PD) vote striking down the motion, ANSA
sources said.
"The crucifix is the civil heritage of all Italians,
because it is clearly the sign of the Christian identity of our
country and Europe," said Northern League councillor Matteo
Casucci, who brought the motion.
Despite the rejection of his motion by the PD, Casucci said
the vote showed a "significant break" within the assembly's
party ranks, citing abstentions by four PD councillors and
regional assembly president Eugenio Giani, also of the PD.
