Italy's COVID-19 Emergency Commissioner Francesco Paolo Figliuolo said Wednesday that more than 86% of the Italian population eligible to be vaccinated has had at least one jab, adding that the threshold of 90% coverage was within sight.
"We are discovering normality thanks to the effects of an unprecedented vaccination campaign," Figliuolo said in a video message to the Salone della Giustizia (Justice Fair) event.
"In a few months this has taken us to the point of being able to protect 46.5 million Italians, over 86% of the population over 12.
"That puts Italy well above the European average, ahead of countries such as France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
"The vaccination campaign is continuing and our aim is to go beyond 86% and reach 90%".
The government had made the Green Pass COVID-19 health certificate mandatory to access places of work in Italy and to do a wide range of activities, such as go to a cinema, theatre, night club or sports event or sit at a table inside a bar or restaurant.
The Green Pass shows that a person is vaccinated for the coronavirus, has recovered from it in the last six months or has tested negative in the last few days.
