The government is deploying an extra 5,296 officers from Italy's various police forces in Rome for this weekend's G20 summit in addition to the security personnel already operational in the capital, a security meeting held by Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese decided on Thursday.
A huge security operation will be in force, with a 10-square-kilometre maximum security area in the EUR area in the south of the capital where the summit is taking place.
Measures will also be tight in the centre of the city and in the areas where the delegations will stay.
The authorities are wary of the danger that anti-vax extremists and protesters against the Green Pass COVID-19 health certificate could try to cause trouble at the two planned demonstrations taking pace on Saturday.
A protest against the Green Pass being obligatory for Italian places of work earlier this month in Rome degenerated into a riot.
One of the protests is against Premier Mario Draghi's government and starts in Piazza San Giovanni at 14:00.
At 15.00 a march by the Fridays for Future movement demanding climate action will start from Piazzale Ostiense,
