The remains of a man who died decades ago were found in a cave on Mt Etna Tuesday evening, sources said Wednesday.
Experts said he was about 1.7m tall with congenital malformations to his nose and mouth.
The date of death was some time between the end of the 1970s and the start of the '90s, experts said.
The man did not die a violent death, they said.
He may not have been able to get out of the cave on Europe's tallest active volcano.
The remains were found by a finance guard alpine rescue sniffer dog named Halma.
The man was wearing long dark trousers, a light-coloured striped shirt, a wool jumper, a black ties, a small cape of drak green nylon, a woolen hat with pom-poms, and Pivetta size 41 shoes.
He was carrying some old lire, an Omega watch and a comb with a case for it.
