Mustafà al-Nazzal, the five-year-old boy who was born without limbs because of the use of chemical weapons in the Syrian conflict, landed in Rome on flight from Istanbul on Friday after Italy decided to grant him and his family asylum.
Mustafà became a symbol of the conflict after of an award-winning photo of him smiling with his father, who had to have a leg amputated because of the war, went viral.
The photo, entitled 'Hardship of Life,' was taken by Turkish photographer Mehmat Aslan and won the Siena International Photography Competition.
