Italian inflation surged to 4.8% in
January from 3.9% in December, and is now at its highest since
1996, ISTAT said Tuesday, confirming preliminary estimates.
Energy prices showed their biggest hike ever, up 94.6 in the
year to January%.
Prices in the 'trolley' of household goods were up 3.2%.
Stats agency ISTAT said it was concerned about the social impact
of rising prices and also on the effect on GDP if inflation
continues to rise.
