President Sergio Mattarella said
Monday that it is possible to stop war even as conflict rages in
Ukraine in his message for the International Day for Mine
Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action.
"This is a time that makes us understand even better the value
of peaceful co-existence, of the respect of international
conventions to reduce the impact of wars on populations, of
cooperation between peoples," Mattarella said in a massage to
Santina Bianchini, the head of the Italian Campaign Against
Mines (Campagna Italiana Contro le Mine Onlus).
"Stopping wars and destruction is possible, affirming everywhere
the reasons of human civilization that we do not intend to
disregard.
"Every war is inhuman," the head of State continued.
"Decisions can be taken in wars that are so cruel that they cut
through every limit of horror.
"Planting landmines and using special explosives that am to
terrorize the population and cause massacres of unarmed
civilians is one of these and it is a crime against humanity
that is added to the responsibility for conflict".
