A minors court in the Marche port
city of Ancona has authorized an Italian non-Muslim mother to
stop her 13-year-old Muslim son observing Ramadan fasting for
health reasons, the court said in the first ruling of its kind
in Italy Wednesday.
The mother told the court the fasting would compromise her son's
physical and psychological health as well as his school
performance in view of the middle-school ending exam he has to
sit in a few weeks.
The court made the ruling on an urgent plea from the mother, who
has no said she will go ahead with her decision.
The man's father, from whom the woman is separated, lives abroad
but convinced his son to observe the Ramadan fast.
