Italian MEP Dino Giarrusso announced
Wednesday that he was leaving the 5-Star Movement (M5S) to form
his own political movement.
Giarrusso has been critical of the positions the M5S, which
started out as an anti-establishment movement, has adopted in
recent years and the compromises it has made after being in
government since the 2018 general election.
"I'd like to found a movement that makes it possible for the
south and north (of Italy) to be equal," said the Sicilian, who
was a familiar face with the Italian public before he went into
politics as he was a reporter for Le Iene, a Mediaset show that
mixes satire with investigative reporting.
"The M5S has lost its values".
The M5S caucus in the European Parliament called on Giarrusso to
resign as an MEP after leaving the movement he was elected with.
