A candidate for the centre-right Forza
Italia (FI) party in Sunday's local elections in Palermo, Pietro
Polizzi, was arrested by police on Wednesday over suspected
links with the Mafia.
Prosecutors said they suspect that, in exchange for help in
getting elected, Polizzi entered into pact with the Uditore
clan and the Sansone family of construction entrepreneurs.
A member of that family, Agostino Sansone, was also arrested on
Wednesday.
The latter is the brother of Gaetano Sansone, the owner of the
villa where late Cosa Nostra 'boss of bosses' Totò Riina stayed
in the months before he was arrested in 1993.
