Consumer associations and hard-up
citizens took empty pans to the streets of several Italian
cities on Friday to protest at the cost-of-living crisis.
"The pans are empty because most Italian families don't have
enough to eat due to the very high inflation rate," Furio
Truzzi, the president of the Assoutenti association, said at a
protest in Rome's Piazza Santi Apostoli.
"We are here because the government must listen to us.
"We want structural measures, for example revising the
speculative energy prices, not stop-gap measures.
"The political world must resolve things deep down.
"Billions are going up in smoke without solving the problem".
There were also empty-pans protests in Florence and Naples.
