A 64-year-old Forlì man who posed as a
24-year-old local man's girlfriend on social media for over a
year before the young man killed himself when he found out the
truth a year ago has now killed himself too, police said Sunday.
Daniele took his own life out of shame after finding out that
the 'girlfriend' he had talked about marrying and having kids
with was in fact the 64-year-old Roberto.
The perpetrator of the 'catfishing' case killed himself on
Saturday night after the case went public.
Daniele's family had asked satirical TV show Le Iene for help in
bringing to justice the 64-year-old man from a nearby town who
for a year posed as Irene, a beautiful 20-year-old who said she
had fallen in love with the first victim.
The pair exchanged over 8,000 messages in a year, even talking
about getting married and having kids, the family told Le Iene,
which has promised to keep prosecutors on the case.
Daniele's relatives are fighting a prosecutor's request to
shelve the case.
