Premier Giorgia Meloni expressed solidarity on Monday for the people affected by a 7.8-magnitude earthquake that hit Turkey and northwester Syria overnight, killing hundreds.
"Constantly updated by Civil Protection Department, Premier Giorgia Meloni is following the developments regarding the devastating earthquake that hit Turkey, on the border with Syria," the Italian government said in a statement.
"She expresses her closeness and solidarity with the affected peoples".
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said that he had spoken with his Turkish counterpart Mavlut Cavusoglu to express Italy's support and offer the help of the Italian Civil Protection Department.
Foreign ministry sources said there were no reports so far of any Italian nationals being killed or injured in the disaster.
Initially after the quake struck, the Civil Protection Department raised the alert for a possible tsunami and rail traffic was briefly suspended in the southern regions of Sicily, Calabria and Puglia before the alarm was lifted.
