Italian intelligence service shave
alerted the government on the activities of Russian mercenary
group Wagner in African countries, driving migrants to Italy,
Defence Minister Guido Crosetti said Monday in response to Green
leader Angelo Bonelli who had accused the minister of being
"shameless" in blaming Wagner and not a "huge" humanitarian
crisis for the migration flow boom.
"The issue I raised was highlighted by the insiders and an alert
in this sense had already come from the services such as
parliamentary intelligence oversight body Copasir. If Bonelli is
instead exclusively interested in engaging in political
polemics, I have no time to lose," said Crosetto after the
Green-Left Alliance MP had invited him to "be ashamed" after his
statements on Wagner's influence on instability in African
countries and therefore on migratory flows.
"It would be better," he added, "for Bonelli to reflect and
acquire more information on the issue, given that I spoke about
it as the head of Italian defence and not as a politician. It is
a responsibility that leads me to speak the bare minimum and
always measure my words, all the more so as Defence chief".
