Italy is to evacuate 200 civilians including 140 Italians out of Sudan, Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on Sunday.
"There are 140 Italian citizens who need to be evacuated, the assembly point is the embassy which is fully operational, and then there are the military who will be involved in the rescue operations," Tajani said during current affairs talk show 'Mezz'ora in più' on Rai 3.
"We will also help evacuate the Swiss and the Apostolic Nunciature and about 20 European citizens. About 200 civilians will have to be evacuated by our military," added the Foreign Minister.
Tajani said he has spoken with the leaders of the two warring parties in Sudan, where recent fighting between the regular army and paramilitary forces has left hundreds of people dead, and received guarantees regarding the security of Italians during the evacuation.
"Both said they were in favour of allowing the convoy of Italians to leave the country," Tajani added.
"We are working to ensure that we can get all Italians who want to leave to safety. by the end of the night," he concluded.
