Italy and the UK have the same
values, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak told Premier Giorgia Meloni
in bilateral talks at Downing Street Thursday.
"The values of the UK and Italy are aligned", said Sunak.
The prime minister added that the two countries are working
together on the same challenges, such as the illegal invasion of
Ukraine and countering illegal immigration, recalling the close
'friendship' between London and Rome, allies in NATO. He cited
military collaboration under the Global Combat Air Program and
said there is "much to discuss today" to strengthen ties between
the two countries. Sunak concluded in Italian: 'Thank you
Giorgia, welcome to London'.
Meloni said: "We are nations that, as you said, have a strong
partnership but can do even more. On big issues we are on the
same side, like defence and Ukraine. If we do not fight
alongside Ukraine, the strongest will no longer win over the
right, but the strongest will win over the right."
