EU border agency Frontex said Tuesday
it would have acted in the same way again over a February 26
migrant shipwreck that left 94 confirmed dead at Cutro in
Calabria.
That night, Frontex did not flag the boat as posing a potential
wreck risk, before smugglers eluded tax police boats and the
Italian coast guard was not called out ahead of the disaster.
"I know it will sound like a strong statement, but if we had the
same information today that we had then we would behave in
exactly the same way. We can only assess the situation based on
the information we have we cannot send a message for every boat
we see'," said Frontex Executive Director Hans Leijtens in a
hearing at the European Parliament's Justice Committee on the
Cutro shipwreck debate.
