Italy's Antitrust authority said
Wednesday that it has opened a probe into the Italian Soccer
Federation (FIGC) for alleged abuse of its dominant position in
the organization of amateur youth competitions.
It said the FIGC is suspected of "trying to limit the
organization of amateur tournaments by bodies for the promotion
of youth sport".
It said that the federation was the sector's main operator
thanks to the special, exclusive powers of regulation and
coordination assigned to it by the Italian Olympic Committee
(CONI).
Among other things, the authority referred to fact that a
significant number of amateur sports associations and their
officials were reported to FIGC sporting prosecutors on March 3
for not having requested permission to participate in
tournaments in Campania in the 2021-22 season organized by other
bodies.
