A husband and wife couple remained in
prison custody on Wednesday after being arrested on Sunday
morning in a village near Ravenna for allegedly stealing 5,500
euros from an elderly couple affected by the flooding that left
15 people confirmed dead in the Emilia Romagna region last week.
In confirming the custody order, the preliminary investigations
judge described the action of Martin Faqolli, 39, and Valde
Dudi, 33, both of Albanian origin, as "unscrupulous and
resolute", saying the couple had exploited a "collective
emergency for sinister venial purposes."
Local media reported that the pair had been part of a team of
volunteers participating in the relief effort in Fornace
Zarattini, just outside Ravenna.
They must now answer to charges of complicity in residential
burglary aggravated by their alleged victims' lowered ability to
defend themselves and condition of extreme hardship owing to
their need to mud-out their home.
