The Archpriest of St Peter's Basilica,
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, was to conduct a penitential liturgy at
the Altar of the Confession on Saturday after the act of
desecration on Thursday.
Cardinal Gambetti was to be joined by the canons of the Chapter
of the Papal Basilica of St Peter's and members of the faithful,
according to the Vatican press office.
On Thursday a man of Polish origin stripped naked and climbed
onto the high altar with the words "Save children of Ukraina"
written on his back in English.
He was subsequently detained by the Vatican Gendarmerie before
being handed over to the Italian police and issued with an
expulsion order.
