An immediate extension of the COVID-19
red zone at Bergamo to two outlying areas in the early days of
Italy's virus pandemic would have been unreasonable, judges said
after clearing former premier Giuseppe Conte and former health
minister Roberto Speranza of negligent and culpable homicide in
the Val Seriana deaths Wednesday.
Conte was accused by the Bergamo Public Prosecutor's Office of
failing to set up a red zone in the Bergamo area in Alzano and
Nembro.
But since 'it does not appear that Prime Minister Conte, before
2 March 2020, had been informed of the situation in the
municipalities of Nembro and Alzano Lombardo, according to the
indictment, he should have decided on the establishment of the
red zone on the same day. And according to the ministers' court
this is obviously an unreasonable assumption," said a statement
outlining the ruling.
