At the instructions of Premier Giorgia Meloni, the Italian embassy in Tirana on Friday settled an unpaid Italian restaurant bill in the Albanian town of Berat, using the premier's money.
"On the instructions of the Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, we have settled the bill left unpaid by a group of Italian tourists at a restaurant in the city of Berat," announced the embassy in a statement.
The incident occurred in the same days in which Meloni was on holiday in Albania, which has become an increasingly popular Italian tourist destination because of its much cheaper beach prices.
"Italians," the embassy statement concluded, "respect the rules and pay their debts, and we hope that such episodes will not be repeated".
It also stressed that the money came from Meloni's private funds.
