The new US ambassador to Italy and
the Republic of San Marino, Jack Markell, arrived in Rome on
Saturday morning.
The former governor of Delaware, appointed by President Joe
Biden, arrived at Fiumicino airport from Philadelphia together
with his wife Carla around 9 am local time.
He succeeds Lewis Eisenberg, who was made ambassador by former
US President Donald Trump and ended his mandate on January 17,
2021.
Since then, the US has been represented in Italy by Chargé
d'Affaires Shawn Crowley.
Markell, who holds a Master's degree in Business Administration
from the University of Chicago, began his political career as
State Treasurer of Delaware (from 1999 to 2009), before becoming
state governor for two terms (from 2009 to 2017), the first
Jewish person to hold the office.
In August 2021, during the evacuation of Afghan civilians
following the US withdrawal from the country, he was appointed
White House coordinator of 'Operation Allies Refuge', the
programme to help refugees settle in the US.
Two months earlier, Biden had appointed Markell US ambassador to
the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development
(OECD).
