Political cartoonist Sergio Staino died Saturday morning in hospital in Florence at the age of 83.
The leftist cartoonist and creator of the archetypal Bobo character had been ill for some time and was hospitalised a few days ago.
Staino was a pillar of the Left in Italy but also an often perplexed and amused critic of its foibles, and was a former editor of l'Unità, once the organ of the now-defunct Italian Communist Party (PCI), once the biggest Communist party in western Europe. He later joined its centre-left heirs.
