Italian Defence Minister Guido
Crosetto made a lightning visit to Lebanon on Monday to meet
Italian military personnel deployed in the south of the country
close to the demarcation line with Israel.
Sources said the minister wanted to "see for himself the
security conditions, morale and the current situation of the
contingent" in light of the crisis sparked by the October 7
Hamas attack against the Jewish state.
At the Shamaa military base Crosetto was welcomed by General
Giovanni Brafa Musicoro, head of the Italian contingent
totalling around 1,000 personnel participating in the UNIFIL
(United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) mission.
His press office said he would then have meetings with
institutional representatives in the capital Beirut.
