Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister
Antonio Tajani said Wednesday he would "listen to the views" of
Deputy Premier and Transport Minister Matteo Salvini on the
Israel-Hamas war but insisted that the government's position is
clear.
"I will listen to the views of vice president Salvini to
understand what his ideas and positions are on the crisis in the
Middle East, but as far as the position of the Italian
government is concerned it is clear: for us Hamas is a terrorist
organisation," said Tajani.
Earlier Salvini hit out at Turkish President Recep Tayyip
Erdogan for saying he considered Hamas to be "liberators"
fighting for their land rather than terrorists. Salvini said
Erdogan's words were "serious and disgusting and do not help
de-escalation" and added that he would ask Tajani to summon the
Turkish ambassador and lodge a formal protest.
